Selected Readings of Fundamental Classical Theory Texts of Western Architecture History

SS108
Spring 21

From the most ancient theory work about Western Architecture Ten Books on Architecture of Vitruvius, to the fundamental architectural theory work De re aedificatoria (On the Art of Building) in ten books by Leon Battista Alberti, and the more recently published works Quattro libri dell’architettura by Andrea Palladio and Books I-V of Tutte l’opere d’architettura et prospetiva by Sebastiano Serlio, all these works constitute the Fundamental Classical Theory Texts of Western Architectural history. The key notions, the method of classification and the categories of architectural knowledge constitute the fundamental subjects of discussions in and about the theory and history of Western Architecture. Through a series of selected readings of Fundamental Classical Theory Texts, we hope to cultivate students’ cultural sensitivity, historical awareness, and the perception of architectural aesthetics.
