This salon focuses on the marriage and migratory experience of Yi women who migrate from Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture in Sichuan to the Pearl River Delta area. Based on interviews and participant observations in Liangshan and the Pearl River Delta area, this talk will analyze how the intersectionality of class, ethnicity and gender shapes the gendered experiences of ethnic Yi female migrants. The rural-urban migration brings Yi women from social reproduction arena into productive arena. Yi females unprecedentedly challenge the patriarchy and rebel the arranged marriage. However, the intersection of patriarchy and capital renders them vulnerability in the labor market. While emphasizing the structural constraints, this talk does not ignore the agency and subjectivity of Yi female migrants. The study of ethnic minority females from southwestern China significantly contributes to our understanding of female's participation in labor market in the age of globalization.
